Universal Credit Journal Guide: How to Use Your Journal

The Universal Credit Journal, often called your UC Journal or My Journal, is part of your online account, so you do not need a separate Journal login.

Sign in to your Universal Credit account, then open your Journal. You can use it to message your work coach or case manager, ask questions, provide information and check updates about your claim.

How to Access Your Universal Credit Journal

Your Journal uses the same account as your Universal Credit claim, so you can access your UC online Journal after signing in. You do not need separate Journal login details.

How to Sign In to Your Universal Credit Journal

  1. Open the official Universal Credit sign in page.
  2. Enter the username and password you set up.
  3. Sign in to your account.
  4. Open your Journal.
  5. Check for new messages and updates.

Your account also lets you check your To Do List, payment information and Universal Credit statement and claimant commitment.

If you cannot sign in, the issue may affect your main account rather than your Journal. See our Universal Credit Login Problems guide for help with common access issues.

What Is the Universal Credit Journal?

The Journal is the communication area inside your Universal Credit account. It is also where you can use the DWP Journal to communicate about your claim.
You can use it to keep in touch with Universal Credit. Depending on your claim, this may include your work coach or case manager.

If you are new to the system, Universal Credit explained can help you understand how the wider system works before using your Journal.

You can use the Journal to:

  • Ask general questions
  • Tell Universal Credit something about your claim
  • Record job applications, interviews or training
  • Read messages from Universal Credit
  • Keep a record of activity linked to your claim

DWP also uses Journal messages to contact claimants about their claims. You will usually get a text or email when there is a new message. You still need to sign in to your account to read it.

Is There a Separate Universal Credit Journal Login?

No. There is no separate Universal Credit Journal login. Sign in to your Universal Credit online account first, then open your Journal from there. You do not need to create a separate Journal account.

Journal vs To Do List vs Report a Change

These parts of your Universal Credit account have different purposes.

If you need to…Use
Ask a general questionJournal
Message your work coachJournal
Reply to Universal CreditJournal
Complete a required taskTo Do List
Check an action you need to completeTo Do List
Report a change in circumstancesReport a Change
Check your paymentPayment section

The Journal is mainly for communication. The To Do List shows actions you need to complete. DWP says you should check it regularly and complete required tasks as soon as possible. A missed task can delay or stop a payment.

The Report a Change process is used to tell Universal Credit about changes that could affect your claim.

When Should You Use Your Journal?

  • Use your Journal when you need to communicate about your claim.
  • You might need to ask a question, explain a problem or contact your work coach.

When Should You Use the To Do List?

  • Use the To Do List when Universal Credit gives you something to complete.
  • A task may ask you to provide information, upload evidence or attend an appointment.

When Should You Report a Change?

  • Use the Report a Change option when your circumstances change.
  • Examples can include changes to work, income, housing or your household. The exact changes you need to report depend on your circumstances.

How to Use Your Universal Credit Journal

Before sending a message, make sure the Journal is the right place for your issue. Keep your message clear and focused. Include the details the person handling your claim needs.

How to Read a New Journal Message

  • Sign in to your account and open your Universal Credit Journal.
  • Read the full message before taking action.
  • If it asks you to complete a task, check your To Do List too.
  • Some requests may include a deadline. Do not leave them until the last minute.

How to Send a Journal Message

  • Open your Journal and choose the option to send a message.
  • Explain what happened and what you need.
  • Include dates when they matter.

If you have already completed a related task, mention it clearly. A short factual message is usually easier to understand than a long explanation.

How to Reply to a DWP Message

  • Read the message carefully before replying. Answer the question that was asked.
  • If Universal Credit requests information, provide the relevant details.
  • If you cannot complete a request, explain why as soon as possible.

How to Message Your Universal Credit Work Coach

Your work coach can support you with work related requirements, job searches, training and appointments. Your Universal Credit claimant commitment sets out the work related activities you may need to complete. You can use your Journal to communicate with your work coach when appropriate.

What Should You Include in a Journal Message?

A useful message should make three things clear:

What happened?

When did it happen?

What do you need?

Example of a Universal Credit Journal Message

I could not attend my appointment on Tuesday because my child was unwell. Please let me know if I need another appointment.

What Should You Avoid Writing?

Avoid unrelated details and repeated messages about the same issue. DWP says not to include information that could put you at risk of fraud. Examples include bank details and National Insurance numbers.

Never share your password or security code.

Who Reads Your Universal Credit Journal Messages?

  • Your Journal is used to communicate with Universal Credit.
  • Depending on the issue, your work coach or case manager may handle your message.
  • Your work coach can support you with work related requirements. Your case manager helps manage your claim.

If you are unsure who needs to deal with an issue, explain the problem clearly.

How Long Does Universal Credit Take to Reply?

The Journal is not live chat. If you’re wondering how long UC take to reply to Journal messages, DWP says it might take a few days for your work coach or case manager to reply. Replies are sent during usual opening hours

  • You can still send a Journal message when you need to.
  • Avoid sending several messages about the same issue while you wait.

If the matter is urgent, see our Universal Credit Helpline guide for phone numbers and contact options.

Can You Use Your Journal at Night or on Weekends?

  • Yes. You can send a Journal message outside normal office hours.
  • That does not mean someone will reply immediately.
  • DWP says Journal replies are sent during usual opening hours.
  • The Journal is not a live chat service.

If you need to know when the Universal Credit phone line is available, see our Universal Credit opening times guide.

Uploading Evidence for Universal Credit

Universal Credit may ask you to provide documents during your claim. Check your To Do List when this happens. A specific task may explain what evidence you need to provide.

Where Should You Upload Requested Evidence?

Follow the instructions in the relevant task.

For example, a Universal Credit review may ask for bank statements and documents about your circumstances. These can include housing costs, earnings, savings, childcare, children, student finance or caring responsibilities.

Do not assume that a general Journal message is the correct place for every document. If you have questions about a review request, DWP says you can ask the claim review agent through your Journal.

What Happens If You Miss a Journal Message or To Do?

  • Check your account regularly. A Journal message may contain a request, update or deadline.
  • Your To Do List may contain an action you need to complete.
  • DWP says required To Do tasks should be completed as soon as possible. If you do not complete required tasks, your payment could be delayed or stopped.
  • The same applies to mandatory appointments.

If you cannot attend an appointment, explain the reason as soon as possible. DWP says you should contact Universal Credit if you cannot respond to a message or complete something required by your claimant commitment.

If you do not complete a required task or attend a mandatory appointment without a good reason, your Universal Credit could be affected.

See our Universal Credit sanctions guide to learn how sanctions can affect your payment.

Reporting a Change of Circumstances

A change in your circumstances can affect your Universal Credit.

Examples can include:

  • Starting or leaving a job
  • Changes to your income
  • Moving home
  • Changes in your household
  • Changes to savings or investments
  • Changes involving children
  • Changes in caring responsibilities

You should report relevant changes through your Universal Credit account. (GOV.UK)

Your Journal can still help when you need to explain the change or ask a question.

Should You Use the Journal or Report a Change?

  • Use Report a Change when your account provides that option.
  • Use the Journal for questions or communication about the change.
  • Do not rely on a Journal message alone when your account provides a specific reporting process.

How to Find Old Universal Credit Journal Messages

  • Your Journal can show previous activity connected with your claim.
  • Open your Journal history and look through earlier entries.
  • Some entries may need to be expanded before you can read the full information.
  • If you need information for your own records, save or print it where your account allows.
  • Keeping important records can help you remember what you previously told Universal Credit.

What If Your Universal Credit Journal Is Not Loading?

First check whether you can sign in to your main Universal Credit account. If the account itself will not open, the problem may be with your login.

If you can sign in but the Journal will not load, try:

  • Refreshing the page
  • Signing out and signing in again
  • Using another browser
  • Trying another device
  • Checking whether the service is unavailable

If the wider service appears to be down, see our Universal Credit Service Unavailable guide.

What If You Get a Journal Notification but Cannot See the Message?

  • Sign in to your account directly.
  • Do not use an unexpected link from a text or email.
  • Check both your Journal and To Do List.
  • DWP says you will usually receive a text or email when your Journal or To Do List is updated.
  • If the message still does not appear, try again later.

Universal Credit Journal Security and Privacy

Your Universal Credit account contains important personal information. Protect your login details and security information. DWP says you should not include bank details or National Insurance numbers in Journal messages.

Never share your:

  • Password
  • Security code
  • Bank details
  • National Insurance number

Be careful with unexpected messages and links. If you think someone has accessed your account, change your password and contact Universal Credit.
